Welcoming Message

Welcome to our website. We are a group of students studying in the University of Hong Kong, majoring in Language and Communication. In this semester, we are doing a group research project on the language minorities for our course LCOM3001: Cultural dimensions of language and communication. Our group has chosen the African language minority group as our research focus. We sought to identify and understands the language issues, problems and challenges that the African migrants are facing in the Hong Kong society and examine these issues by relating them to relevant socio-linguistic and anthropological frameworks and literatures.

Through investigating the Africans’ use of language in different contexts including the workplace and home, social life and their different encounters with the local people in Hong Kong, we have discovered that there are certain barriers which have been hindering a majority of them in actively conforming their identity to Hong Kong’s society. These barriers include the language, societal and institutional barriers. In this website, we will unveil how the African community encounter and handle these three types of barriers in their daily life in Hong Kong, how they perceive themselves as a community in the Hong Kong society, as well as how they respond to those barriers and difficulties in their life in Hong Kong. By presenting our research findings and information, we hope to arouse government’s and public’s attention and interest in appreciating the African language minority community in Hong Kong – to have a more receptive heart and mind towards this minority group.
